Social Networking

This decade, social networks are the new boom, the new toy for teenagers. Teenagers all over the world connect with each other by Facebook, Twitter, MySpace, Hi5... but is this helping them in any way or just damaging their future and consuming their brains?

I’m sure parents will be a little bit relieved that these web pages do help teens develop relationship skills, building their inter-emotional intelligence. But really it just depends on the teenager. Studies have shown that young adults who lack of social intelligence are the ones that are more likely to post inappropriate information. Why? Just because they want to get some at attention, is they are not getting it in real life they at least want to get it from the internet.

The social networks are not completely un-useful as some adults believe, it has its advantages. For example connecting with your siblings that live far away or re-connecting with your long distance friends. Also it can help you talk more. For example if there is a person that is really shy or babbles too much, these social networks let those people `speak´ without any worries about their speech.

It is true that cyber bullying has increased and that it may be dangerous, but it is only if you don’t use the correct measurements. It is not the web pages fault that the user accepts anyone as a `friend´. Go to the security section of the social network-page and change it to something safer.

But we have to admit this, not everything we like is good for us, especially if you are a teenager preparing for college. Facebook, Twitter, MySpace are too addictive. Once you have it you can’t stop using it. It whispers to you `come, use, I need you, your friends are here´. Also social networks and the media work together to cause eating problems to some adolescents. The first step in this cycle is a big kid being affected by the media (anorexia or bulimia), them she posts a photo of herself in her account. After that a friend see it and realises see looks really fat next to her/his friend so she/he beings to have eating disorders. All of these consequences are the after-effects of an irresponsible teenager. At the end,it's your life, you decide.
